J.J. Watt talks about maybe coming out of retirement to play for the Texans.

J.J. Watt, a defensive wunderkind, and some Houston Texans supporters hinted this spring that Watt would come out of retirement to play again later this year.

Although Watt appears happy in retirement, he isn’t quite closing the door on making a significant comeback to the field between this September and Super Bowl LIX.

During a Wednesday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Watt stated on the Texans, “They have no need or use for me right now,” according to Philip Marsh of DAZN. “They have an excellent defense in place. They have assembled an incredible crew. They’re all OK. It was indeed the case both last year and this year—if they required assistance in an extremely urgent circumstance, I would provide it.”

While playing for the Texans from 2011 to the 2020 season, Watt was nominated for five first-team All-Pro teams and won three NFL Defensive Player of the Year Awards. Before he retired in early 2023, he played for the Arizona Cardinals for two seasons. However, he made hints this past winter about considering a late-season move to the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Houston Texans.

T.J. Watt, Watt’s brother, is a standout pass-rusher for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This year’s postseason tournament included Pittsburgh and Houston.

During Wednesday’s program segment, J.J. Watt said, “I don’t think people understand how much stuff would have to happen for that scenario to play itself out.”

Additionally, he stated that although he feels he could still make a significant contribution, he is content to stay retired:

Last week, Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported that J.J. Watt is expected to appear “on a part-time basis” in CBS’ “The NFL Today” program this next season. Nevertheless, J.J. Watt, who turned 35 in March, has never participated in a Super Bowl game.

The Texans were ranked fifth among the betting favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LIX as of Wednesday afternoon, with +850 odds, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

Although it’s safe to say that J.J. Watt is done with spring training and long training camp sessions, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans might be able to persuade the future Hall of Famer to at least think about going after a championship if Houston appears to be a real contender around Christmastime.
