Josh Reynolds’ departure in free agency cost the Detroit Lions some significant depth at wide receiver, but one analyst thinks they have an opportunity to replace his departure with an even more experienced veteran.
The Lions are among the clubs that may gain the most from a late free agency signing, according to Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon, who also pointed out that the team still lacks depth at wide receiver. Despite giving Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Penei Sewell all costly contract extensions, the Lions still have roughly $28.4 million in cap room. Kenyon proposed using some of that money to sign veteran receiver Michael Thomas.

Beyond Everything In favor of St. Brown, the Lions’ wide receiving corps is a little hazy. Jameson Williams, a third-year receiver, has displayed moments of outstanding play, but he has also struggled with consistency and has faced concerns about his maturity following his gambling suspension.
While tight end Sam LaPorta is a future star, Kenyon said the Lions “shouldn’t expect more than complementary production out of Kalif Raymond” and that they could need another reliable target.
Though Kenyon acknowledged that Thomas might not have an immediate impact, he might be a valuable addition to a club that lost a lot of output when Reynolds signed a free agent contract to join the Denver Broncos.
“But Detroit can afford the risk—and the current outlook at the position is practically begging for the Lions to take one,” Kenyon wrote. Veteran players Hunter Renfrow and Mecole Hardman might possibly be available as free agents.
Despite a rough beginning to his career, injuries have slowed Thomas down, but he still had a successful season in 2023 with the Saints. 39 receptions for 448 yards and one touchdown were made by him.
