Round two DL Johnny Newton joins Commanders for a rookie contract.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC, the Commanders have signed defensive tackle Johnny Newton, a second-round selection, to a four-year contract worth $9.757 million. 86.4 percent of the contract, plus a $3.916 million signing bonus, is guaranteed.

For his left foot, Newton is still wearing a walking boot following surgery in May to address a partial Jones fracture.

Although Newton has “all his markers” after his surgery, according to coach Dan Quinn earlier this week, the team is still unsure about whether he will be ready for training camp to begin.

After missing six games due to the same issue during his time at Illinois, Newton underwent surgery on his right foot in January.

He was nevertheless selected 36th overall by the Commanders.

He was an All-American in 2023 and a two-time All-Big Ten selection.

The Commanders have Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne at the position.
