New updates as road closed after tragic incident

Emerald Isle, Carteret County — A 30years cyclist is recovering after being hit by a car Saturday while riding his bike in Emerald Isle.

Emerald Isle police confirmed around 2 p.m. the cyclist was riding on a bike path along Emerald Drive by the Crystal Coast Welcome Center. He then crossed over the street through stop-and-go traffic and was hit by a car heading west. He flew off his bike and landed on the median. The 44-year-old driver Kristy Pruitt Best of Mt. Olive did not have a valid license.

This incident reignited concerns about bike safety in a tourist hotspot. For high schooler Caeben Dady, he spent his spring break riding his bike along the coast. “I think it’s kind of important to be looking out for kids biking, especially when the weather starts getting nicer,” he said.

According to BikeWalknc.org, cyclists should keep these rules in mind when on the road.

1. Drive on the right side of the road

2. Obey all traffic signs

3. Switch lanes only when it is safe

4. All children under 16 must wear a helmet

Declan Kelley, who is also visiting on spring break, said he will stay more aware after an alarming experience riding along the road. “We were riding our bikes through the town through one of the crosswalks with its lights flashing, and even with the lights flashing a truck came close to us, and my friend was scared about it,” he said.

Declan added that people distracted by cell phones can also contribute to wrecks. “Some people can’t even keep their eyes on the road anymore. I think they just need to pay more attention,” he said.

The man remains in the hospital in stable condition.
