Road closed after tragic death of five today on eastbound carriageway

According to Kent Police, a 29-year-old man lost his life in an A2 collision close to Rochester.

According to police, the black Volkswagen Tiguan collided with a central barrier and a bridge parapet when it was traveling on the coastbound carriageway close to the A289 slip road.

Roads between the M2 and the A227 were closed in both directions due to the collision, however they are now open again.

When the South East Coast Ambulance Service arrived on the scene, the guy was declared deceased. We have notified his next of kin.

In connection with the collision, police are requesting dashcam footage and witnesses.

“A specialist structural engineer is also at scene assessing the bridge supports which were also struck,” a statement released by National Highways earlier Thursday stated.

According to earlier reports, the vehicle struck two lampposts and bridge supports.

It is believed that the collision caused a lamppost to fall.

Beginning in the early hours of Thursday, the closure between the A227 at Gravesend and M2 junction 1 at Rochester was lifted at around 12:00 BST.

Although delays in the area were beginning to subside, Kent Highways stated that one lane would stay restricted on the coastbound highway to facilitate barrier repair work.

It further stated that the westbound carriageway was congested for approximately four kilometers and saw delays of up to an hour.
