The Minnesota Vikings currently have a stable quarterback situation, with JJ McCarthy impressing both the team’s staff and the media during May’s organized team activities (OTAs). Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers face uncertainty at quarterback and might need to trade for one of the Vikings’ former signal-callers, Kirk Cousins.

Cousins Could Fill the Gap if Rodgers Stalls

Although Aaron Rodgers is Pittsburgh’s primary target, the Steelers know that a deal with him isn’t guaranteed. If Rodgers doesn’t sign, the team could be left relying on Will Howard and Mason Rudolph as their quarterbacks for the 2025 season.

Additionally, with the Steelers trading away wide receiver George Pickens, they could use help in the passing game. Tight end Kyle Pitts, despite not fully living up to expectations since being the 2021 fourth overall draft pick, has still accumulated over 2,600 receiving yards in four seasons.

Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report suggests the Steelers might pursue a trade for both Pitts and Cousins, offering the Atlanta Falcons a package of draft picks in return:

• Steelers Receive: TE Kyle Pitts, QB Kirk Cousins
• Falcons Receive: 2026 2nd-round pick, 2026 5th-round pick, 2027 4th-round pick

Why This Trade Could Happen

Pitts hasn’t matched his rookie season’s production and doesn’t have a contract beyond this year, so the Falcons would likely need more than just a second-round pick for him. By including Cousins in the deal, Atlanta could offload the veteran quarterback and gain significant cap savings—approximately $27.5 million after June 1.

If Rodgers doesn’t sign with Pittsburgh, Cousins could become the team’s starting quarterback and potentially a better long-term option. Cousins is over four years younger than Rodgers, adding to his appeal.

Still Uncertain for the Steelers

While most expect Pittsburgh to sign Rodgers, his contract remains unsigned, leaving Mason Rudolph as the default QB1. If Rodgers retires or plays elsewhere in 2025, Cousins might be the best option available.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has hinted that until Pittsburgh secures a quarterback, the possibility of a trade for Cousins remains open.

Although the draft pick price tag might seem high for an aging quarterback and a tight end who hasn’t lived up to expectations, the trade remains a real possibility before the offseason ends.
