Why Would Boston Trade Devers?

Devers remains a polarizing figure in Boston, partly due to his reluctance to play anything but designated hitter — despite the team needing more flexibility at third base. Additionally, the Red Sox are reportedly mindful of their payroll and may be looking ahead to top prospect Kristian Campbell, who could emerge as a long-term infield solution. Shedding Devers’ massive contract while acquiring high-upside young talent could be a strategic move.

What’s in It for the Yankees?

New York would part with top-tier prospects and move on from Goldschmidt’s $12.5 million salary. In return, they’d secure a long-term solution at third base in Devers, who is one of baseball’s most dangerous hitters. His .932 OPS this season ranks 10th in the majors, and in May he’s posted a scorching 1.114 OPS — nearly identical to Aaron Judge’s 1.156.

Could It Really Happen?

While the odds of this deal actually going through are slim, it would undoubtedly be the biggest Yankees–Red Sox trade in modern history — perhaps rivaling the infamous 1947 deal that almost happened. That year, Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey and Yankees president Dan Topping reportedly agreed to swap Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio during a night out. But Yawkey backed out the next morning when Topping refused to include a young catcher named Yogi Berra.
