At third base, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson has linked the Cubs to Yoan Moncada, a former top prospect currently enjoying a resurgence with the Los Angeles Angels. In 29 games, Moncada is slashing .240/.339/.510 with six home runs and 19 RBIs, giving him an OPS+ above the league average of 100. He’s also heating up at the plate, with four homers in his last 15 games and two in his last seven.

Once considered a generational talent from Cuba and compared to Robinson Cano, Moncada had a breakout season in 2019 but has struggled to replicate that success due to injuries and high strikeout rates. The Chicago White Sox declined his club option last offseason, making him a free agent. Now 30, Moncada may never reach the ceiling once expected of him, but his recent form suggests he’s regained some of that potential.

Why might the Cubs be interested? If Matt Shaw continues performing well, there may be no need to trade for Moncada. But if his performance dips and the Cubs want to add another power bat to their infield, Moncada—especially as a switch-hitter—could be a low-risk, high-reward option. His acquisition cost, both financially and in terms of prospects, likely wouldn’t be significant, making him a potentially appealing fit. According to Anderson, Moncada could be on the move this summer, and the Cubs may be a serious contender to land him.
