The NFL has a harsh way of showing that potential doesn’t guarantee longevity, and New York Giants wide receiver Jalin Hyatt may be learning that lesson firsthand this offseason. Despite his blazing speed and third-round sleeper status, the Giants appear ready to explore other options — and a possible reunion with a familiar veteran could push Hyatt further down the depth chart.

A Speed Threat Still Waiting to Break Out

Hyatt entered the league out of Tennessee with a reputation as a deep threat capable of torching defenses. However, that promise was never fully realized in New York. Between a struggling offensive line and instability at quarterback, Hyatt rarely had the opportunity to shine. The Giants’ conservative passing game didn’t help either, limiting chances for explosive plays.

Now heading into Year 3, the excuses are wearing thin — and so might the patience from the coaching staff. The addition of Russell Wilson could improve Hyatt’s chances, but the front office isn’t waiting around for that to play out.

Giants Reconnect with a Familiar Option

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, the Giants remain in touch with Gabe Davis following a recent visit. Davis, who suffered a meniscus tear last season and was released by the Jaguars, is a known commodity to head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen from their time together in Buffalo. In 2022, Davis put up 983 yards and eight touchdowns in Daboll’s vertical offense — a system in which he clearly thrived.

If healthy, Davis could provide value as a situational weapon or red-zone target, even if he’s not expected to be a featured receiver.

Potential Fallout for Hyatt and Others

Signing Davis would further crowd an already competitive receiver group. First-round pick Malik Nabers is firmly positioned as the WR1, and veteran Darius Slayton is still in the mix. That leaves Hyatt with little room for missteps. If Davis returns to form, Hyatt could be relegated to a rotational role or even inactive status on game days.

It’s a clear example of how quickly things shift in the NFL — and how little room there is for sentiment when results matter most.

Still Just Talk — for Now

At this point, Davis hasn’t been signed, but the Giants are keeping the door open, assuming he can prove he’s healthy. As Hughes notes, June isn’t a time for blockbuster additions, but Davis could still offer more upside than many late-offseason options.

Hyatt still has time to impress during training camp. But if he doesn’t, the Giants may turn back to someone they know and trust — and who has already thrived under their current leadership.
