Lions Make Roster Tweak at Cornerback, Add Former Giant Divaad Wilson

Ahead of their next round of OTAs, the Detroit Lions have made a minor adjustment to their cornerback depth chart, opting for experience over potential.

According to Monday’s NFL transaction wire, the Lions signed former New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals cornerback Divaad Wilson and waived undrafted rookie Gavin Holmes with an injury designation. This roster move comes just before Tuesday’s practice.

Holmes, who joined the team as a UDFA following the 2025 NFL Draft, was aiming to overcome size concerns (5’11”, 173 lbs) and carve out a depth role in the Lions’ secondary. Unfortunately, an undisclosed injury has derailed his plans for now. If Holmes goes unclaimed on waivers, he will revert to the Lions’ injured reserve list unless the team reaches an injury settlement.

Wilson Brings NFL Experience to a Competitive Cornerback Room

While Holmes offered developmental intrigue, Wilson brings something the Lions now need more of: live NFL game reps.

Undrafted in 2023, Wilson has seen regular-season action with both the Cardinals and the Giants. He made his first career start as a rookie in Arizona, playing all 61 defensive snaps in that game and recording four tackles. More recently, Wilson contributed mainly on special teams, though he logged 26 defensive snaps in the Giants’ 2024 season finale, notching his first career pass breakup along with five tackles and a defensive stop.

For Detroit, Wilson represents a low-risk, experienced depth option behind projected starters D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold. He’ll have to compete with the likes of Amik Robertson, Avonte Maddox, and Rock Ya-Sin for a backup role, but his special teams ability could give him a path to the 53-man roster.

Lions Face Major Change at Center Following Frank Ragnow’s Retirement

While the Lions’ cornerback adjustments made headlines Monday, the bigger development came from the offensive line: All-Pro center Frank Ragnow announced his retirement at just 29 years old. Citing health concerns, Ragnow posted a heartfelt message on Instagram confirming his decision to step away from the game.

“I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good, but I’m not, and it’s time to prioritize my health and my family’s future,” Ragnow wrote. “I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don’t.”

Ragnow’s unexpected departure leaves a significant hole in the Lions’ interior offensive line just months after major coaching and personnel shifts. The team now faces a decision: shift veteran Graham Glasgow back to center or hand the reins to rookie Tate Ratledge, who’s been cross-trained at the position during offseason work, according to PFF’s Trevor Sikkema.

Regardless of how the depth chart shakes out, Detroit may explore the free-agent market for additional interior line reinforcements — whether that’s another center to push Glasgow/Ratledge or a guard to offset a potential positional move.
