Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso took a moment at the end of her Monday night press conference to direct a message toward the NCAA, following her team’s 3-2 elimination loss to Texas Tech in the Women’s College World Series.

Before wrapping up, Gasso asked the media if she could briefly speak her mind. What followed was more than just a brief comment—it was a passionate call for reform.

“I’ve been in this tournament long enough, and there’s one thing that absolutely needs to change,” Gasso said. “If we truly care about women’s athletics like we claim to, then stop making us play doubleheaders to decide who reaches the national championship series. It’s unacceptable.”

Gasso pointed out the inequity between how softball and baseball are treated in postseason scheduling.

“They don’t do this in baseball. Why are we doing it here?” she asked. “If Texas Tech had lost to us after going undefeated to that point, they would’ve had to turn around and play again immediately. That’s not fair — not to them, and not to us.”

Her frustration was focused not only on fairness but also on the impact on performance and player well-being.

“This is one of the most-watched championships across all sports,” Gasso added. “Why rush it? Fans will come back the next day to watch a decisive game. What they won’t want to see is exhausted players who can’t perform at their best.”

Currently, the WCWS format requires a potential second semifinal game to begin just 30 minutes after the first concludes — a stark contrast to the Men’s College World Series, where a deciding game is played the following day.

Gasso’s comments may signal the beginning of broader conversations around equity and scheduling in women’s sports — a push that coaches could continue to bring before the NCAA in hopes of reform.
