After a rough 2024 season where Texas Tech ranked 126th nationally in total defense—allowing a staggering 460.2 yards per game—and 121st in scoring defense by giving up 34.8 points per game, it was clear that changes were necessary. Even with a capable offense, allowing those kinds of numbers makes winning difficult at any level.

Recognizing the urgent need for improvement, Texas Tech aggressively attacked the transfer portal in the offseason, targeting top-tier defensive talent. Their efforts paid off with key additions like David Bailey, Romello Height, Lee Hunter, and Skyler Gill-Howard—all of whom are expected to start this fall.

The transformation has already drawn national attention. On Tuesday, PFF College ranked Texas Tech’s defensive line as the third-best in the country, behind only Alabama and Clemson.
