One unexpected candidate who could become available is Alex Bregman of the Boston Red Sox. Although Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston this offseason, he is currently on the injured list. With the Red Sox struggling, they could become sellers by the July 31 trade deadline. CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder highlighted Bregman as a possible trade candidate, noting his opt-out clause after this season and the risk Boston faces if he leaves for nothing.

Before his injury, Bregman was enjoying one of his best seasons since finishing second in MVP voting in 2019, boasting a .299 batting average, .385 on-base percentage, and .553 slugging percentage with 11 home runs. If traded, Bregman would likely serve as the Yankees’ everyday third baseman, allowing Chisholm to return to second base and significantly upgrading their infield. Although the Yankees would probably view him as a rental, his salary for this season is manageable at $25 million due to deferred payments totaling $60 million.

While acquiring Bregman would cost the Yankees considerable prospect capital—and even more than usual since he’s coming from a division rival like the Red Sox—the potential reward could justify the price. Meanwhile, the Red Sox may have to accept that trading Bregman to the Yankees could net them the best return if their season continues to falter.
