West Virginia head coach Steve Sabins didn’t hold back when voicing his concerns about Clemson’s ballpark setup, specifically calling out the Tigers’ on-field bullpen positioned next to a beer garden. Sabins described the arrangement as both distracting and potentially hazardous.

Speaking ahead of the Mountaineers’ Super Regional matchup with LSU, Sabins questioned the logic of allowing pitchers to warm up just feet away from fans—especially those who may be intoxicated.

“They really need to fix that,” Sabins said during his press conference. “It was extremely loud… around 8,000 fans at Clemson. Great energy. It’s a fun atmosphere—but it felt more like a minor league game than traditional college baseball.”

Sabins highlighted the differences between Clemson’s setup and more conventional venues, pointing to the use of pumped-in music and crowd-triggered sound effects after walks, hits, or other moments. He argued that the heightened theatrics were aimed at unsettling visiting teams.

“Every time something happens—a walk, a hit—the music ramps up. It artificially spikes your adrenaline,” Sabins said. “For pitchers and defenders, it becomes a real factor.”

However, his most pointed critique was aimed at Clemson’s bullpen layout. Sabins described a scene where general admission fans, often with drinks in hand, are separated from pitchers by only a net.

“The bullpen situation at Clemson is bogus,” he said. “It’s so close that you’ve got drunk frat guys just feet away. There’s a net, sure—but someone could literally reach in and grab a pitcher’s arm while he’s warming up.”

While Sabins didn’t claim any actual incidents occurred, he stressed that the setup is problematic enough to raise legitimate concerns—both physically and mentally—for players.

“If a pitcher feels unsafe, it can throw off his mechanics,” he explained. “There really should be some rules in place to regulate that kind of thing.”

As West Virginia now shifts its focus to LSU in the Super Regional, Sabins’ comments reignite a broader discussion about how far college programs should go to create high-energy, fan-driven environments—especially in the postseason.
