The New York Giants made major changes to their quarterback room heading into the 2025 NFL season after a dismal showing in 2024. Following a year where their quarterback play ranked among the league’s worst, the Giants had little choice but to overhaul the group — and they did just that.

Gone are Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tim Boyle. In their place are veteran additions Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, along with promising rookie Jaxson Dart, the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. Tommy DeVito remains on the roster for now, but his spot is far from guaranteed.

The key question now: when might Dart take over as the starter?

Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder raised this very issue in a post-OTAs evaluation, asking, “When will Jaxson Dart be ready?” While the Giants don’t intend to start Dart immediately — with Wilson expected to lead the offense and Winston backing him up — the rookie is already making a strong early impression.

According to John Schmeelk from the Giants’ official site, Dart has handled the pressure of his first NFL reps surprisingly well. “No one is perfect, but Jaxson Dart does not look like a fish out of water,” Schmeelk wrote, adding that while most rookies struggle to process everything at once, Dart hasn’t appeared overwhelmed and has already shown flashes of athleticism and accuracy.

Ideally, the Giants want Dart to develop behind the scenes in 2025 while Wilson or Winston leads the way. However, if injuries strike or the team gets off to a poor start — say 1–6 — fans may start calling for head coach Brian Daboll to make a change and throw the rookie into action.

After a miserable 3–14 record last season, the pressure is on for New York to show progress. If they don’t, both GM Joe Schoen and Daboll could find their jobs on the line. One thing is certain: Giants fans will be watching Dart closely, especially during preseason, to see if he might be the future franchise quarterback they’ve been waiting for.
