On This Day in Braves History:

1961 – The Milwaukee Braves made MLB history by belting four straight home runs in one inning: Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron homered off Reds starter Jim Maloney, followed by Joe Adcock and Frank Thomas taking reliever Marshall Bridges deep. Despite the power surge, the Braves lost a wild one, 10–8, to Cincinnati.

1978 – Atlanta selected slugger Bob Horner with the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft. He made history by skipping the minors entirely—becoming the first top pick to debut directly in the majors.

2015 – Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson was selected first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He would later be traded to the Braves and become a franchise cornerstone.

1920 – Reds outfielder Edd Roush literally fell asleep in center field during a lengthy infield argument. When teammate Heinie Groh tried to wake him up, Roush was ejected for delaying the game.

1955 – The Dodgers optioned Tommy Lasorda to the minors to make room for a young lefty named Sandy Koufax.

1968 – Don Drysdale’s legendary streak of 58 consecutive scoreless innings ended on a sac fly by Howie Bedell.

1969 – Over 60,000 fans filled Yankee Stadium for the emotional retirement of Mickey Mantle’s iconic No. 7 jersey.

1977 – Nolan Ryan struck out 19 batters over 10 innings against Toronto—his fourth career game with 19 Ks.

2005 – Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player ever to hit 400 career home runs, helping the Yankees beat the Brewers 12–3.

2012 – The Mariners no-hit the Dodgers using six pitchers in a combined 1–0 win—one of the most unique no-hitters in MLB history.
