The New York Giants are gearing up for camp season, with mandatory minicamp set for June 17–19 and training camp to follow in late July.

On a recent episode of the “Big Blue Kickoff Live” podcast, WFAN beat reporter Paul Dottino spotlighted a compelling positional battle brewing in the secondary—between former draft picks Cor’Dale Flott and Tre Hawkins.

Dottino emphasized that both Flott and Hawkins are best suited to play as outside (boundary) cornerbacks rather than in the slot. “I’ve said it before—I don’t like Flott in the slot,” he remarked. “He’s much more comfortable on the boundary, using the sideline to his advantage.”

Despite Flott currently having a clear edge over Hawkins, Dottino warned that availability could tip the scales. “If Flott can’t stay healthy and prove he deserves that backup boundary corner role, Hawkins could make a real push and jump him on the depth chart.”

So far, Hawkins has made the most of OTAs. The 24-year-old corner intercepted rookie QB Jaxson Dart during a recent practice, winning a contested ball against UDFA Da’Quan Felton. Meanwhile, Flott struggled, getting beaten by Darius Slayton on a deep pass from Russell Wilson, per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan.

Still, Flott is ahead for now. He’s been rotating in with the first-team defense behind Deonte Banks, while Hawkins is seeing second-team reps.

Dottino noted that Hawkins may have been overwhelmed early in his rookie year, which stalled his development. But he still sees potential: “He’s raw, but he’s got a good toolbox.”

Looking ahead to camp, the Giants’ cornerback room appears to be led by Banks and new addition Paulson Adebo, with rookie Dru Phillips favored in the slot. Behind them, Flott, Hawkins, and Art Green are competing for the CB4 role. Nic Jones appears to be the top backup in the slot.
