Four-star defensive back Peyton Dyer didn’t just flip his commitment from South Carolina to USC on Sunday—he made sure to take a parting shot on his way out, according to On3.

The 6-foot, 205-pound cornerback out of Atlanta added a little sting to the decision by throwing shade at the Gamecocks in his announcement. Playing off the shared “USC” abbreviation between South Carolina and the University of Southern California, Dyer said, “Now that I’m part of the real USC, I’m ready to work and build something special,” clearly suggesting he views the Trojans as the more legitimate “USC.”

Dyer’s decision is a significant blow to South Carolina’s 2026 recruiting class. He would’ve been a major asset to the Gamecocks’ secondary. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Dyer is rated No. 299 nationally, No. 24 among cornerbacks, and No. 32 in the state of Georgia.

The talented defensive back had nearly 30 scholarship offers, with schools like Georgia and Penn State also in serious contention. In the end, though, he chose to head west—not to Columbia, but to Los Angeles, making his allegiance clear: it’s USC of the Pac-12, not the SEC.
