The New York Giants made headlines this offseason with big-name acquisitions, including defensive backs Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland, and by trading up to draft quarterback Jaxson Dart in the first round. But one area that may not be getting enough attention is the emphasis GM Joe Schoen placed on building roster depth.

For the Giants to make a real jump in the win column next season, they’ll need to survive the inevitable injuries that come with an 18-game grind. Fortunately, most position groups appear better equipped to handle that challenge, thanks to improved depth across the board. While much attention has been given to New York’s edge-rushing talent, the offensive line looks more fortified too.

If things go as planned, the O-line could be the most flexible it’s been in years. That said, the extra depth might also give Schoen the option to consider moves he wouldn’t have in the past.

Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport has floated the idea that Evan Neal could be a trade candidate. The former No. 7 overall pick is heading into the final year of his rookie deal, and with the Giants having declined his fifth-year option, there may be teams willing to take a chance—just as the Eagles did with Mekhi Becton last season.

The idea of moving on from Neal after a disappointing stint at tackle is worth considering. Still, the smarter play may be to give him a legitimate shot at guard—a position he played early in his college career at Alabama. If he adapts well to the interior, Neal could still be a valuable piece in the trenches.

Neal’s future still holds potential

That transition won’t come easy. Rookie Marcus Mbow, who has experience at both guard and tackle, and veteran Aaron Stinnie, recently re-signed, will both be pushing for snaps. Yet despite his struggles, the Giants haven’t given up on Neal. There’s hope internally that his size (6’7”, 350 lbs) and reach could make him effective inside.

Davenport agrees with the team’s approach, though he notes that if Neal doesn’t pan out at guard, it would be wise to explore trade possibilities. But by that point, his value might be too low to net even a modest return.

For now, the Giants remain focused on helping Neal transition to his new role. It’s a critical project—not only because of his draft pedigree, but because reliable O-line depth is a must for teams with playoff ambitions. If Neal can refine his technique and adjust to the pace of play inside, he could still be a vital part of New York’s protection plan—an oversized “brick” ready to slide in when needed most.
