BREAKING: Giants’ Bold Jaxson Dart Move Has Fans Divided — But It Might Be Genius

Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart might have a name that sounds like it belongs in a children’s book — or something straight out of caveman lingo — but his mindset heading into his first NFL season is anything but childish.

From the start of OTAs, Dart knew this year would be more about learning than leading. And linebacker Brian Burns gave him a sharp reminder of that during practice when he tracked Dart down on a read-option play.

“He had a read-option play and just, you know, his ability to come back and chase me down was kind of crazy,” Dart said, laughing.

The Giants, coming off a rocky 2024 season plagued by offensive struggles, took Dart with the 25th overall pick in the draft. The plan is for him to develop behind veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, with the goal of eventually stepping into the starting role in 2026.

Despite having a chance to make a splash with some bold rookie statements, Dart instead showed restraint and maturity during a YES Network appearance during the Yankees–Red Sox game. He didn’t boast about beating out the competition — instead, he gave credit to Wilson, Winston, and Tommy DeVito, recognizing the experience and leadership in the quarterback room.

“Russ has a Super Bowl ring, and just getting to learn from guys like him every day has been amazing,” Dart said. “My focus is on getting better each day and doing whatever it takes to help the team win.”

“I hate losing more than anything. Whatever role I have, I’m going to give it my all.”

Wilson, 36, signed a one-year contract with the Giants after a turbulent season with the Steelers, where he split time with Justin Fields. Though Pittsburgh made the playoffs, Wilson struggled in their wild-card loss to the Ravens.

A playoff run might be a stretch for the 2025 Giants, but with a refreshed run game, rising star Malik Nabers at receiver, and a tougher defense, there’s potential for Wilson to steady the offense — and help prepare Dart for the future.

“Jaxson’s been awesome,” Wilson said. “Hard worker, great teammate. We’ve got a good vibe in the QB room — guys are focused and grinding every day. He’s going to be a really special player.”

As OTAs wind down, Dart seems to have a strong understanding of his place in the team’s long-term plans. During his YES appearance, he shared a personal memory of idolizing Derek Jeter growing up. But unlike Jeter, he’s not claiming he’ll lead New York to glory right out of the gate — he’s focused on the slow climb.
