Breaking: Yankees Could Strike Gold After Burnes Blow — $79 Million Star on the Table

Just before the spotlight turned to the Yankees–Red Sox rivalry last week, the Arizona Diamondbacks were hit with devastating news: star pitcher Corbin Burnes needs Tommy John surgery and won’t return until late 2026.

This blow comes in the very first season of Burnes’ massive $210 million contract signed over the offseason. The deal was finalized shortly after Christmas, and at the time, Yankees fans were left wondering why New York didn’t pursue Burnes at that price point.

Especially since some believed the Yankees had “overpaid” for Max Fried, who got a $218 million deal. On paper, Burnes appeared to be the better option — younger, more durable, and with a slightly more favorable contract structure.

However, Burnes ultimately chose Arizona, citing family considerations and the state’s more favorable tax environment. New York’s high tax burden often means shelling out more for top-tier free agents.

That said, even before this injury, Fried had arguably been outperforming Burnes. And now, with Burnes sidelined until at least 2027, Fried looks like the far safer investment over the long haul.

What Burnes’ Injury Means for the Yankees in 2025

More significantly, Burnes’ absence could force Arizona to reconsider its trajectory this season. After being swept by the Reds over the weekend, the Diamondbacks sit three games under .500 and trail the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants in the NL West.

This slump — combined with Burnes’ lost season — may push Arizona to become sellers at the trade deadline. That could open a door for the Yankees, who are in need of reinforcements.

Third baseman Eugenio Suárez, on an expiring contract, could be a prime target. New York is still searching for a reliable solution at the hot corner, making Suárez a potential fit.

Beyond him, Arizona has several other notable players on expiring deals — including Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Josh Naylor, Shelby Miller, and Jalen Beeks. The Yankees could use help across their pitching staff, and Naylor might become an intriguing option depending on how things unfold with health and performance over the next month or so.

If the Diamondbacks don’t intend to retain these players beyond 2025 and continue sliding in the standings, a full-scale sell-off at the deadline seems likely.

Arizona isn’t out of the playoff picture just yet, but with Burnes out and their grip on a wild-card spot slipping, they’re in a vulnerable position — one the Yankees could look to capitalize on.
