When Darius Slayton entered the NFL, he had the uncommon experience of developing alongside the quarterback who was drafted with him—Daniel Jones. But that partnership ended midway through last season when the Giants decided to move on from Jones, cutting the former top-ten pick. Looking to upgrade the position, the team made some big moves this offseason that appear to be resonating well with Slayton.

New York brought in Russell Wilson on a one-year deal in free agency and selected Jaxson Dart in the first round of the draft. While Dart is viewed as the long-term future, Wilson is expected to be the starter for 2025, giving the rookie time to develop behind the scenes. Though Wilson may no longer be in his prime, he still brings veteran poise and talent to the offense. Early on, Slayton seems to be adjusting well to the change.

During mandatory minicamp, Slayton was asked about Wilson’s arrival and had high praise for the former Super Bowl champ. “Honestly, it’s been pretty smooth,” Slayton said, via Giants Wire. “It feels like he’s been here longer than he has. That probably comes from his experience—he knows exactly what he wants, and he communicates it clearly. As long as you’re listening, it’s easy to follow his lead.”

Since being drafted in the fifth round in 2019, Slayton has been a steady contributor in New York’s offense. But instability at quarterback last season saw his numbers dip—he finished with 573 yards and just two touchdowns in 16 games. Still, with Wilson now at the helm, Slayton appears energized and optimistic. If the two can develop strong chemistry, Slayton could be poised for a breakout year.

With minicamp wrapped up, Slayton now turns his focus to training camp next month, where he’ll continue building rapport with his new quarterback.
