Greg Brooks Jr.’s Medical Negligence Lawsuit Clears Legal Hurdle

Former LSU football player Greg Brooks Jr.’s lawsuit against LSU and Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center (OLOL) advanced on Monday after a judge denied a motion to block a subpoena targeting the NeuroMedical Center.

Brooks filed the suit in August, claiming medical negligence related to surgery he underwent in September 2023 to remove a brain tumor—a procedure that left him permanently disabled. Although the NeuroMedical Center isn’t named as a defendant, it is where Dr. Brandon Gaynor, the surgeon in question, practices. The subpoena seeks records concerning Gaynor’s professional credentials.

Judge Tiffany Foxworth-Roberts ruled that the records must be turned over within 30 days. Both Brooks and his father attended the hearing. The NeuroMedical Center had argued that the requested documents were irrelevant and available by other means, but the judge disagreed.

The case will proceed with two key hearings in September. On Sept. 2, the court will review the newly produced documents and decide which can be admitted. On Sept. 8, the judge will consider a motion to compel OLOL to release additional records.

Background on the Case

Brooks is still in a wheelchair and is relearning basic functions like talking, eating, and writing. He and his father shared details of his condition during a February appearance on Good Morning America. On the same segment, Brooks claimed that LSU head coach Brian Kelly had not contacted him or his family since October 2023. Kelly publicly pushed back on that assertion, stating he had been present during Brooks’ recovery and that his staff regularly visited.

Brooks, a team captain and starting safety in his second season at LSU after transferring from Arkansas, was diagnosed with a brain tumor last September. He claims that LSU’s athletic training staff ignored clear neurological symptoms—such as dizziness, headaches, and nausea—and instead diagnosed him with vertigo, allowing him to continue playing without evaluation by team doctors.

According to the lawsuit, Brooks experienced multiple seizures during surgery due to errors made by Dr. Gaynor.

Following the operation, LSU launched the Greg Brooks Jr. Victory Fund and honored him with field decals and other tributes. However, the lawsuit claims that Brooks still hasn’t been given access to the funds raised on his behalf.
