The New York Yankees could soon see a boost to their pitching staff following Monday night’s 11-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

On Tuesday, the team announced that right-hander JT Brubaker has completed his rehab assignment. During that stint, he posted a 2.95 ERA over 21 1/3 innings across six outings at High-A Hudson Valley, Double-A Somerset, and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 31-year-old pitcher was already with the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Monday, and manager Aaron Boone indicated that Brubaker is close to a “potential activation” from the 60-day injured list, according to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty.

The Yankees have not yet decided whether to add Brubaker to the 26-man roster or designate him for assignment. Because he is out of minor league options, the team cannot send him back to Triple-A without placing him on waivers.

If Brubaker is activated, the team will need to make a roster move to free up space.

Originally recovering from Tommy John surgery while with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023, Brubaker was traded to the Yankees in March 2024. His rehab was delayed by an oblique strain, and he never made it back to the majors last season.

In spring training this year, he suffered another setback when he was hit by a line drive off Kameron Misner’s bat during a game on February 21 vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, resulting in three broken ribs. He was placed on the 15-day IL in March, then moved to the 60-day IL on April 1.

Brubaker made 63 appearances (61 starts) for the Pirates from 2020 to 2022, compiling a 4.99 ERA, 4.43 FIP, and 324 strikeouts over 315 2/3 innings.
