On Tuesday morning, the New York Giants made waves across the NFL with a stunning roster move. Tight end Darren Waller, just over a year removed from announcing his retirement, is returning to the game—and he’s being traded to the Miami Dolphins.

Waller, originally a sixth-round pick in 2015, rose to stardom during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders. His breakout year came in 2020 when he posted nearly 1,200 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, earning the lone Pro Bowl selection of his career.

The Giants acquired Waller in March 2023, hoping he could be a key piece in their offense. However, his stint in New York didn’t go as planned. He appeared in 12 games during the 2023 season, totaling 552 receiving yards and a single touchdown. Afterward, Waller revealed he had been battling several health challenges, ultimately leading to his decision to retire from football.

Now, he’s plotting a return.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are trading Waller to the Dolphins in exchange for a future sixth-round draft pick. Waller is expected to sign a one-year, $5 million deal with Miami. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that Waller felt the urge to return to the field, telling those close to him that he missed playing and wanted to come back for the love of the game.

This move comes as Miami reshapes its tight end room, having recently traded Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Waller stepping in, the Dolphins hope he can fill the void and add veteran leadership to their offense.

Although Waller’s tenure with the Giants didn’t live up to expectations, the team still managed to recoup some value by securing future draft capital in the deal.
