Teddy Bridgewater Suspended by Miami Northwestern for Providing “Impermissible Benefits” to Players

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, now the head football coach at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, has been suspended by the school after the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) determined he gave his players benefits that violated their rules.

The suspension appears to be tied to Bridgewater reportedly covering costs for his team, including Uber rides, meals, and athletic recovery services — acts many are calling excessive to punish. Critics argue the decision is unjustified, especially considering Bridgewater’s efforts were focused on supporting his players’ well-being.

Bridgewater confirmed the suspension in a Facebook post on Sunday, stating that he remains committed to Miami Northwestern and has no interest in coaching at any other high school.

According to the Miami Herald’s Walter Villa, Bridgewater paid $700 for player transportation via Uber, $2,200 for pregame meals, and $1,300 for weekly recovery services during the past season. While clearly well-intentioned, these actions violate FHSAA rules, which prohibit coaches from offering free or discounted transportation or purchasing items for players.

Bridgewater took over the program in 2024 after announcing his retirement from the NFL (a decision he later reconsidered). In his first season as head coach, he led the team to a 12–2 record and a state championship.

A first-round pick by the Vikings in 2014, Bridgewater started 28 games for Minnesota before a devastating knee injury in 2016 derailed his early career. Despite that setback, he went on to play for several other NFL teams, including the Saints, Jets, Dolphins, Broncos, Panthers, and Lions, over the next seven years.
