Mitch Richmond Defends ’80s and ’90s NBA Legends: Calls Modern Criticism ‘Disrespectful,Saying Larry Bird Would “Mop” the Floor with JJ Redick
Mitch Richmond Slams Modern Criticism of ’80s and ’90s NBA Legends
NBA Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond has voiced his strong disapproval of a growing trend among some basketball fans and players who claim that the stars of the ’80s and ’90s couldn’t keep up with today’s game. Richmond, known for his scoring prowess and solid all-around play, minced no words in an interview with Back In The Day Hoops On SI, calling such notions “garbage.”
“I think it’s very disrespectful, no question about it,” Richmond said. “I don’t see many players
Criticism from Within the Ranks
Richmond took particular issue with former players like Gilbert Arenas and JJ Redick, who have been vocal critics of past NBA greats. Redick, who is now the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has been notably dismissive of Larry Bird’s legacy, arguing that Bird isn’t among the top five three-point shooters in NBA history. Bird’s career, of course, predated the three-point shot becoming a significant part of the game.
“I’ve heard a couple of players like JJ Redick say something stupid about the players,” Richmond said. “I just think it’s idiotic to always disrespect the people who came before you.”
Bird vs. Redick: Not Even a Contest
When asked specifically about the Bird vs. Redick comparison, Richmond was unequivocal. “Bird would mop him up like it was no other,” he asserted. “I just think it’s really disrespectful. I enjoy today’s game. We all get too much of the barber shop talk… I just think let’s enjoy the generation of what we’re seeing now.”
The Eternal Debate: LeBron vs. Jordan
Richmond also weighed in on the never-ending debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Fans often argue about who would dominate in a hypothetical matchup, with some suggesting LeBron would have been unstoppable in the ’80s.
“We’ve never seen Michael and LeBron go up against each other, so it’s all hearsay,” Richmond said. “… It’s all of our different opinions.”
Respecting the Legacy
Richmond’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of respecting the legacy of past NBA legends. While the game has undoubtedly evolved, dismissing the contributions and talents of those who paved the way is not only disrespectful but also shortsighted. The debate over different eras will likely continue, but Richmond’s perspective emphasizes the value of appreciating each generation’s unique contributions to the sport.
In a world where sports discussions often devolve into heated arguments and hyperbolic statements, Richmond’s call for respect and appreciation offers a refreshing take. After all, the history of the NBA is rich and storied, and every era has its heroes and unforgettable moments.
