Heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox—a game they lost after another offensive letdown—several Braves hitters had positioned themselves for Player of the Week honors with a strong showing. But a breakout performance never materialized. Aside from Marcell Ozuna’s two-hit game, which included a homer, the lineup was quiet.

While a few bullpen arms had respectable outings, the weekly award ultimately came down to two starters: Chris Sale and Spencer Schwellenbach.

Each starter took the mound just once this week. Sale stood out in Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Phillies, notching eight strikeouts—including the 2,500th of his career—in a scoreless outing. It wasn’t his best start of the month, but his consistency earned him the Battery Power Braves Player of the Month for May.

On his 25th birthday, Schwellenbach delivered a dominant performance Saturday against the Red Sox. He hit 100 MPH twice and set new personal velocity highs, striking out 11 over 6.1 scoreless innings while giving up just five hits. His 99-pitch outing featured a fastball that averaged 97.9 MPH and accounted for nearly two-thirds of his pitches.

Just a year after his MLB debut, Schwellenbach is looking like one of the National League’s top arms. Through 12 starts in 2025, his numbers—strikeout rate, walk rate, FIP, xFIP, batting average against, home run rate, velocity—closely mirror his impressive finish to 2024.

His continued dominance is especially crucial for Atlanta, given that AJ Smith-Shawver is out for the season, Reynaldo López’s return remains uncertain, and Spencer Strider is still working his way back to top form.
