Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker learned that firsthand this week when general manager Alex Anthopoulos made a bold move to reshuffle the coaching staff. Though Snitker was part of the decision-making process, it was Anthopoulos who ultimately pushed for former Braves manager Fredi González to replace Matt Tuiasosopo as third base coach.

“It was a tough call,” Anthopoulos admitted. “Snit and I started discussing it on Sunday, continued into Monday, and eventually came to an agreement. We’re always looking for ways to improve.”

While Anthopoulos praised Tuiasosopo’s work—especially with infielders—the decision appears tied to repeated issues at third base, particularly with sending or holding runners. A critical miscue on May 23, when Eli White hesitated on a play that could’ve tied the game, may have sealed Tuiasosopo’s fate.

Anthopoulos and Snitker, who’ve worked together since 2017, weren’t initially on the same page—highlighting just how difficult and delicate this change was. Snitker is known to fiercely support his staff, and Tuiasosopo had earned his shot at the big-league level.

The Braves, currently a disappointing 27–31 and sitting fourth in the NL East, need a spark. Whether this shake-up leads to a turnaround remains to be seen, but Anthopoulos clearly isn’t afraid to make tough calls.

González, who previously coached third base under Bobby Cox before managing the Braves himself, now returns to a familiar role—tasked with helping Atlanta find its footing once again.
