BREAKING: OU Bolsters Defense With Sleeper Recruit – Experts Say He’s a ‘Future Game-Changer’!

The Oklahoma Sooners had a highly productive recruiting weekend, attracting numerous top high school prospects from across the nation to Norman for one of their biggest events before the recruiting dead period begins. They generated significant momentum with several prospects, and one of those visitors has already made his decision following his visit.

Defensive end Matthew Nelson, part of the 2026 class, announced his commitment late Sunday night, joining Oklahoma’s rapidly expanding 2026 recruiting group.

Hailing from Arkansas, Nelson is teammates with linebacker Jakore Smith, who committed to Oklahoma back in May and helped kick off their 2026 summer recruiting efforts. Nelson becomes the Sooners’ fourth commit since May 13th. Interestingly, Nelson is an unranked recruit—no major scouting service has rated him yet. Still, the Sooners clearly saw strong potential in his skill set.

The coaching staff was drawn to his intriguing athletic upside. While still a raw talent, Nelson’s 6’5”, 215-pound frame and his experience as a three-sport athlete (football, track, and wrestling) impressed the staff, who have a strong track record developing defensive ends under position coach Miguel Chavis.

Oklahoma secured Nelson’s commitment over two other SEC programs, Missouri and Mississippi State, both of which had offered him. Other FBS programs like Houston, Tulane, and Cincinnati have also extended offers.

Though the Sooners continue to target additional defensive line talent for 2026, Nelson’s potential stands out. Given Oklahoma’s success developing defensive players and pass rushers, this could prove to be a savvy pickup down the road.

Nelson is raw and will need to add weight before he’s ready for regular SEC competition, but in a conference where pass rushers are always in demand, he’s a valuable addition.
