Yankees reliever Jake Cousins has yet to pitch in the majors this season as he recovers from a flexor strain in his elbow. The right-hander began the year on the 60-day injured list and recently began a rehab assignment in hopes of returning to the big leagues.

However, that return may be delayed. Cousins was pulled from his rehab stint on Wednesday after just two outings. This came a day after manager Aaron Boone revealed he was undergoing an MRI due to renewed elbow discomfort. “To feel something with the elbow is concerning,” Boone said Tuesday. By Wednesday, Boone confirmed the MRI showed what “seems to be a UCL injury,” though additional opinions are being sought.

The 30-year-old was a key bullpen piece during the Yankees’ 2024 World Series run, posting a 2.37 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 38 innings. After injuring his elbow earlier this year, imaging initially showed a healthy UCL, making this latest setback particularly troubling.

Cousins was originally drafted by the Nationals in 2017 but was released following an injury. He climbed back to the majors via independent ball and the Brewers, where he debuted in 2021 with a 2.70 ERA. After some struggles in 2023 and a brief stint with the White Sox, he joined the Yankees in March 2024 and quickly became a standout. Now, his 2025 season is in jeopardy.
