BREAKING: Snitker on the Hot Seat? Meet the 3 Coaches Braves Fans Would Love — and the 2 They Should Dread
One way or another, Brian Snitker’s time as manager of the Atlanta Braves is winding down. Whether he retires after the 2025 season, returns for one more year, or the organization decides to move in a new direction, the clock is ticking. It’s not too early to start seriously discussing who could — or shouldn’t — replace him.
At present, the Braves don’t have an obvious heir apparent. But a few names have ties to the organization and could make sense as candidates. Others? The team would be wise to steer clear.
Walt Weiss: The Safe, Familiar Option
Longtime bench coach Walt Weiss stands out as a logical successor. He’s well-known and respected within the Braves’ clubhouse and front office, and he brings previous managerial experience from his time with the Rockies. Choosing Weiss would mean minimal disruption and a seamless transition.
That said, for fans hoping for a new direction, Weiss may feel too much like “more of the same.” Still, if the Braves value stability over change, Weiss could easily be the top choice.
John Gibbons: A Regressive Move
Former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons, who has connections to GM Alex Anthopoulos, has reportedly expressed interest in returning to the dugout. Gibbons is currently on the Mets’ staff, and hiring him would be a cheeky swipe at a division rival.
However, Gibbons doesn’t inspire much confidence. His managerial track record is largely mediocre, with years of underwhelming results in Toronto. If Atlanta is serious about contending year in and year out, Gibbons likely isn’t the right fit.
David Ross: A Respected Leader with Braves Ties
David Ross would be a compelling candidate. Widely respected across the league, Ross earned praise from players during his time managing the Cubs, even though it ended abruptly. He’s seen as a good blend of traditional leadership and analytics.
Ross also has history with the Braves, having spent four seasons as a player in Atlanta. While his family life — including three kids — may make him hesitant to return to the daily grind, he’s available and should be on the Braves’ radar.
Please Avoid: Fredi Gonzalez
This one’s simple: Fredi Gonzalez already had his shot with Atlanta, and it didn’t go well. Since then, his coaching stops have been short-lived and unimpressive. Rehiring Gonzalez would feel like turning the clock back in the worst way. If the Braves want to maintain momentum, Gonzalez isn’t the answer.
Ron Washington: A Beloved Leader, But With Caveats
Ron Washington is a beloved figure in the Braves’ clubhouse — his leadership, mentorship, and old-school energy were irreplaceable during his tenure. Now managing the struggling Angels, Washington could be a strong candidate to bring back.
However, there are questions. At 73, his age may be a concern, and his “old school” approach might not align with the modern game’s demands. Plus, his impact in L.A. hasn’t yet yielded results. He may be more effective as a coach than as the one steering the ship.
