Yankees Encouraged to Target Eugenio Suárez in Deadline Deal to Fill Third Base Void

As the July trade deadline approaches, the New York Yankees are once again among MLB’s elite. With Aaron Judge leading the offense—and emerging as a top MVP candidate possibly headed for a Triple Crown—the team has been firing on nearly all cylinders. Their rotation is also looking sharp, anchored by a resurgent Carlos Rodón and ace Max Fried.

Despite a few shaky moments, the bullpen is trending upward with Devin Williams rounding into form and Luke Weaver set to return next month. Even without superstar Juan Soto (now with the Mets) and injured ace Gerrit Cole (recovering from Tommy John surgery), this Yankees squad may be stronger than the 2024 version that made it to the World Series.

Still, there’s one glaring weakness: third base.

The Yankees have experimented with Jazz Chisholm at the hot corner, but that leaves a gap at second base—his natural position and where he excels defensively. This makes third base a top priority for the deadline.

ESPN’s Brad Doolittle believes Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez could be the perfect solution. The 33-year-old is having another power-packed season, posting a .233/.305/.514 slash line with 19 home runs, 52 RBIs, and an .819 OPS. Though not a standout defender, Suárez makes up for it with his bat—he’s hit 30+ homers in three of the last four seasons and mashed a career-best 49 in 2019.

Suárez has already logged 1.2 fWAR this season, a clear upgrade over the Yankees’ combined 0.0 fWAR at third base. On an expiring deal—Arizona exercised his $15 million club option after his original 7-year, $66 million contract—he could come at a relatively low trade cost.

His postseason bat could also prove crucial. In eight playoff games, Suárez owns a strong .810 OPS, making him an ideal rental to deepen the Yankees’ October run.
