The New York Giants’ offensive line still has a long way to go before being considered one of the NFL’s elite, but they might have stumbled upon an unexpected boost on the inside.

Evan Neal, the team’s first-round pick in 2022, has struggled mightily at offensive tackle since entering the league—so much so that the Giants are now trying him at guard in hopes of unlocking the potential that made him a top-10 pick.

Until now, Neal had been taking snaps exclusively at left guard during the offseason program. But during Tuesday’s minicamp, he made a significant move in his battle to stick with the team—he lined up at right guard as well. That versatility could be key to improving his chances of not only making the roster but eventually cracking the starting lineup.

“The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reported that Neal, who played left guard as a freshman at Alabama, was initially kept at that spot to provide a level of comfort as he makes the switch from tackle. However, during minicamp, Neal saw reps at both guard positions—filling in at right guard while Jon Runyan slid over to the left, then shifting back to left guard later in practice.”

Given the current outlook, Neal could find his way into the starting five—potentially replacing veteran left guard Greg Van Roten, who, at 35, isn’t seen as a long-term piece for the franchise. Neal stepping into a starting role could not only rejuvenate his career but also stabilize a long-shaky offensive line.
