Dan Campbell provides a mostly upbeat injury update for the Lions as they approach camp.
A significant number of players benefit from on-field work during OTAs and minicamp. Others, particularly those recovering from an ailment, value their sheer presence at practice.
Thursday was the final day of the Lions’ required minicamp. It’s also the last time the complete squad will be together until training camp, with the final voluntary OTA sessions taking place next week before a six-week hiatus.
Cornerback Khalil Dorsey was taken off after injuring his lower leg during Wednesday’s practice. On Thursday morning, according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, head coach Dan Campbell delivered good news for Dorsey.
“Yeah, he should be good,” Campbell remarked. “We have fantastic news on that. It looks like a minor ankle sprain, so he’s fine.”
DJ Reader, Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, Marcus Davenport, and Emmanuel Moseley have all missed OTAs while recovering from surgery. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs sustained what Campbell described as a “soft-tissue injury,” but it does not appear to be a major concern. Other veterans’ practice repetitions have been managed over the offseason, if only to allow those who are less established to work.

Campbell believes that most players who have been struggling with or recuperating from an injury will be ready to start training camp. He made a point of noting one potential exception: Reader.
“Yeah, I would say Reader will be the one where there will be a decision on at what point is he ready to start practicing,” Campbell stated. “But we’re not surprised by that. We knew it would take a minute. I would expect everyone else to be close to ready. If not, things are going to be tight. It will be sufficient to allow them to complete a significant amount of training camp work.
Reader had a torn right quad tendon late last season with the Cincinnati Bengals, which kept him accessible for the first several days of free agency before meeting with the Lions. As Campbell remarked, they were well aware of Reader’s predicament when they signed him. He is expected to start as a nose tackle whenever he is medically cleared, which should happen during training camp if he is not ready for Day 1.
